If you have changed email addresses, and wish to change your Chirp username to use your new email address, it is possible to do so. However, there is some work involved for two reasons:
a) Your software / sync license encodes your username, so you need to request a new software / sync license from us; and
b) if you wish to retain existing data, you must change the Assignor / Assignee, and Project Coordinator for all tasks / projects you are involved in.
If you do wish to retain the tasks, you must complete all steps; otherwise, complete steps 1, 3 and 4.
In these descriptions, your “old” account (/email) is shown as old@myco.com and your new user account is new@myco.com
Step 1: Change your username, license
If you have not already done so, please go to the Plum Canary account registration page and create an account for your new username (email address).
Then, open a support ticket and request that your old license be transferred to your new account. Please provide both your OLD and your NEW user account names (email addresses).
Step 2: Change Assignor / Assignee / Project Coordinator
Using your old account, we must change all tasks / projects you wish to have visible under your new account.
- Change Coordinator. Select the first listed Project in the Projects tab. Click the Project Info toolbar icon (last on the right). If old@myco.com is shown as the project coordinator, click the "Change..." button on the right of that line. In the dialog that appears, enter your new username new@myco.com. Click OK in this dialog (only), returning to the Project Info dialog.
- Change Assignor/Assignee. While the Project Info pane for this project is still showing, click the username for old@myco.com in the "Members" list at the bottom of this dialog, then click "Remove." Two dialogs will appear, asking who to change the Assignor / Assignee on for tasks assigned by/to this user. Enter your NEW username here (new@myco.com). When complete, you can click OK to close the Project Info dialog.
- REPEAT. Repeat steps 1a and 1b for each project in your Projects tab.
- Other projects. There may be some projects where you are NOT the Project Coordinator. You will not have been able to complete 1a and 1b for these projects, since items would have been greyed out and not be selectable. If you wish to retain control of these projects and if you are still acquainted with the person who *is* listed as the coordinator, contact that user, and have them perform step 1a and 1b for you in their instance of Chirp.
- Handle remaining tasks - Assignor. In the main Chirp window, click the column heading Assignor. If you find any more tasks assigned BY old@myco.com, open those tasks, click the "Change Assignor" link at the bottom of the task description, and change the assignor to your new account. (These will likely be in projects where you were NOT the coordinator.)
- Handle remaining tasks - Assignee. In the main Chirp window, click the column heading Assignee. If you find any more tasks assigned TO old@myco.com, **if** you are the Assignor of those tasks, open those tasks, and change the Assignee. If you are NOT the Assignee, please contact the Assignor and have them change either the Assignee (and possibly the Assignor!) to your new account.
- After this, no tasks should remain that are either assigned by, or to, your old address (old@myco.com).
- After this, perform two syncs.
- Exit Chirp after you complete this.
Step 3: Convert your local Chirp to use your new username
Please perform the first three (3) steps described on this web page.
The next time you restart Chirp, it will ask you the questions to re-authenticate you. Provide your NEW account name (new@myco.com) and password as you created it in Step 1 above.
Step 4: Enter new license key
After Plum Canary responds to your support case and provides your with your new license key / entitlement for your new address, please return to http://www.plumcanary.com , and log in under your new login name (new@myco.com), and click the link to "View your entitlements." In the table that appears, look for the row with the entitlement that has an expiration date that is the FURTHEST in the future, and click the link at the right side of that page for your new entitlement key. Copy that key using your browser's Edit > Copy commend.
Start Chirp, answer the first-use questions (if presented) to authenticate your new account, and when Chirp is running, select Help > Register Software, and enter key as directed in step 4 of the web page linked above.
- At this stage, Chirp should have performed a sync, and your "old" tasks should now be present in your new account.
Other notes about changing IDs
- Renaming (or deleting) your (old) Chirp folder will not cause your data to be lost for the "old" username, as long as you have recently synchronized that account before deleting this folder. The data will be preserved on the server, and will be restored to your client if you delete the Chirp folder again, re-run the first-use questions, and provide your "old" username / password.
- Renaming (or deleting) your (old) Chirp folder *will* render the local copy of your license key for Chirp invalid. If you are still within the initial 30-day free trial window, this is not an issue; a new key will be provided to you automatically. If, however, you have a paid copy of Chirp, and wish to re-use your old user ID, you MUST re-retrieve your license key from the Plum Canary website, and enter it into Chirp again.
- A crude, but effective method to maintain multiple user accounts is to simply exit Chirp, rename the Chirp data directory an "alternate" name (e.g. chirp-username2), and rename a previously-renamed directory (e.g. chirp-username1) back to Chirp. When you re-launch Chirp, it will assume and use the username / data for the identity associated with the account that is currently "in" the Chirp data directory.
